Matt Doherty’s time at Tottenham Hotspur could be brought to an end after just one season, with ESPN reporting that Jose Mourinho has doubts about keeping the right-back beyond the summer.
Doherty has had a tough time since moving to North London. It did appear that Spurs had produced a masterstroke signing the Republic of Ireland international for £15 million.
Unfortunately, he has struggled to force his way into Mourinho’s plans on a consistent basis. The 29-year-old has only made nine starts in the Premier League.
He has been behind Serge Aurier in the pecking order this season. And on Sunday, he only came on at half-time for Japhet Tanganga.
Tottenham caused plenty of problems down the right flank during the second-half at West Ham. However, it appears that Doherty is now fighting for his Spurs future.
According to a report from ESPN, Mourinho has doubts about Doherty, and it is claimed that the Tottenham boss is considering making him available ahead of the summer.
There is plenty of time for Doherty – who earns around £65,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – to turn his fortunes around. He has previously shown that he is good enough to be a star at the highest level.
He had a direct hand in seven Premier League goals last season with Wolves.
And if he can enjoy a run in the team, he can surely rediscover his best form once again and prove a real point to Mourinho.
