Report claims Leeds want West Brom star Sam Johnstone

Leeds United are one of the Premier League sides interested in signing Sam Johnstone from West Bromwich Albion, according to a report from The Sun.

Illan Meslier has started every Premier League game for the Whites this season. The Frenchman’s inexperience has perhaps been exposed on a couple of occasions.

However, the signs suggest that the 20-year-old is destined for a fantastic career at the highest level. Nevertheless, it appears that Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta may be keeping their options open.

According to a report from The Sun, Leeds are monitoring Johnstone. It is claimed that Brighton are also interested in the Baggies goalkeeper.

The Sun notes that Johnstone’s contract at the Hawthorns expires in 18 months.

TBR View: January move to Elland Road surely unlikely

Johnstone – who earns £32,500-a-week, according to Spotrac – has been a revelation for West Brom this season. As reported by The Sun, no goalkeeper in the Premier League has made more saves than the 27-year-old since their promotion.

Nevertheless, it is difficult to see Johnstone ending up at Leeds next month. Despite his contract situation, West Brom are unlikely to let him go on the cheap.

And even if Leeds made a move, there is no guarantee that he would become first-choice. Bielsa is clearly happy with Meslier’s form as Kiko Casilla has not had any game-time in the top flight.

Of course, a move elsewhere may be more likely in the summer if the Baggies are relegated. But as things stand, Leeds signing Johnstone in January seems unlikely.
