Leeds United did come to an agreement with Liverpool over a potential deal for Ryan Kent this summer, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The talented winger re-joined former loan club Rangers on a permanent deal this week following a summer of speculation surrounding his future. The Ibrox club spent around £6.5 million on the player, according to Sky Sports, with that fee potentially rising to £7.5 million with various add-ons.

Leeds United were also heavily linked with the player this summer. However, according to the Liverpool Echo, they failed to agree a deal with the Reds. They report that a £4.5 million bid from Leeds United was rejected the day before the Championship transfer window shut.

But the YEP are reporting differently. They claim that Leeds and Liverpool did reach an ‘agreement’ over a transfer fee for the player. That deal was reportedly set to be worth an initial £4 million, rising to £7 million.

However, Leeds had ‘a change of heart’.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa was so impressed by the early season form of Jack Harrison that it was decided another winger was not needed at Leeds. The attention shifted to a more central attacker and Leeds eventually snapped up Arsenal youngster Eddie Nketiah instead.

Leeds United certainly appear to have a far better balance to their team thanks to this decision. Whilst Kent would have been a fine addition, the return of Harrison, not to mention loan deals for Jack Clarke and Helder Costa, does seem to have Leeds well-stocked out wide.

As for Kent, he always seemed to have his heart set on a move back to Glasgow and Leeds fans will no doubt whish him all the best in Scotland.

Who knows? In a couple of years, maybe Leeds will come knocking again for an immensely talented young player.
