Report claims Leeds United contract offer lacks ‘appeal’ and Kalvin Phillips is unlikely to sign

Kalvin Phillips is reportedly ready to see out this season without renewing his contract at Leeds United. As reported by The Sun, the Leeds midfielder is wanted by Aston Villa this summer.

The report claims that the newly-promoted Premier League side have bid £15 million for the Leeds midfielder. That is as high as Aston Villa will go for the player, who The Sun previously reported is valued at £30 million by Leeds United.

The report states that Leeds have offered Phillips a new contract which ‘has little appeal’.

The suggestion is Phillips will not sign that deal, preferring instead to remain at Leeds and negotiate a move to Villa in the summer or stay at Elland Road in the event they are promoted to the Premier League.

The original story from The Sun stated that Phillips would then be able to negotiate a free transfer to Aston Villa in 12 months time. That has since been rectified as Phillips’ contract does not expire in 2020.

As reported by the club’s official website in August 2017, Phillips signed a new deal at Leeds that contracted him until the end of the 2020-21 season.

Of course, with just one year left on his deal next summer, he would be in a far better bargaining position with Leeds.

Whatever happens, it seems Phillips will be staying at Leeds this season. Aston Villa are not willing to pay the asking price and Leeds can afford to keep him for the season considering the two years left on his contract.

But should Leeds fail in their promotion bid, next summer will be a huge test of Phillips’ loyalty to the club.
