Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was apparently tempted to sign Franck Ribery this summer.

That’s the claim from L’Equipe, who say the German was at one point considering a swoop on the veteran winger, who is currently a free agent.

The Frenchman ran down his contract at Bayern Munich and is on the lookout for a new club.

Liverpool have been very quiet in the transfer market this summer, and appear to be heading into 2019/20 with more or less the same squad as last season.

At the moment, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah are Klopp’s options out wide, with Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri able operate there too if needed.

TBR’s view

Ribery to Anfield would have been a very interesting signing.

Arguably it would not have gone down well with most Reds supporters, who are itching to see the club sign quality players with time on their side.

Ribery would have brought experience and an impressive winning mentality – in 12 seasons at Munich, he won nine Bundesliga titles, six German Cups and one Champions League.

Klopp has obviously seen him in action whilst managing Borussia Dortmund, so maybe there is some truth to the reports.

But one would have to question how 36-year-old Ribery would fare in such a high octane team, even if he would just be a bit-part player.
