Aston Villa defender Frederic Guilbert will likely leave the club on loan during the January transfer window, according to a report from Birmingham Live.

Guilbert has endured a tough time since arriving at Villa Park. He made 22 starts in the Premier League last season. However, he has not featured for Dean Smith’s side in the top flight this term.

He is currently down the pecking order at right-back. Summer signing Matty Cash has proved to be an inspired addition. Meanwhile, Ahmed Elmohamady has provided cover for the former Nottingham Forest star.

And it now looks as though the 25-year-old will be on the move next month. According to Birmingham Live, the £4.5 million signing will likely leave Villa on loan.

It is claimed in the report that the loan should include an option to buy. So it would appear that Guilbert may well have made his final appearance for the Villans.

TBR View: January exit best for all parties

It makes sense for all parties to reach an agreement that leads to Guilbert’s departure. As shown by Spotrac, he is on £40,000-a-week at Villa Park.

So a move away may free up some space in Smith’s budgets. That may perhaps allow the Villa boss to strengthen in another area of his squad before the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Guilbert can focus on getting his career back on track following a move that has just not quite worked out.
