Ivan Toney’s outstanding start to life at Brentford has caught the eye of Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, according to a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato.
Toney has been an inspired signing for the Bees with the club losing both Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma over the summer.
The 24-year-old has scored 13 goals in just 15 Championship appearances for Thomas Frank’s side. And it now appears that Brentford may be facing a battle to keep him.
According to Calciomercato, the Toffees are monitoring Toney. However, it is not clear whether they could potentially make a bid in January or next summer.
The report may be met with some scepticism from fans of both clubs. It is interesting that Calciomercato seem to be reporting Everton’s interest before other publications.
Of course, the Toffees do have links to Italy through Ancelotti. So there is every chance that the interest is genuine, and this may not be the last time Toney is linked with a Merseyside switch.
But perhaps it should be no surprise if some supporters were not getting carried away about the prospect of Toney moving to Goodison Park just yet.
TBR View: Toney’s talent undebatable
What is not in doubt however, is that Toney looks to be destined for the highest level. He has scored 37 league goals since the start of last season. And he has raised his game following the step-up to the Championship.
Brentford have now won three in a row and occupy a play-off spot. So they appear to have a fantastic opportunity to push for promotion once again after last year’s agonising conclusion.
Landing Toney will not be easy for Everton, particularly if they move in January. And should the Bees get promoted, his value will surely increase significantly once again.
