Tottenham Hotspur are likely to face competition from Portuguese side Benfica for the signature of Giovani Lo Celso this summer.
As reported by the London Evening Standard, Tottenham are now ready to pursue a move for the Argentine playmaker.
His current club Real Betis are closing in on Nabil Fekir from Lyon, leaving them ready to discuss the transfer of Lo Celso. Tottenham would have to break their transfer record for the second time this summer, with a £67 million price-tag currently on Lo Celso’s head.
The report does, however, state that Benfica are ready to challenge. Armed by the recent financial boost of Joao Felix’s sale to Atletico Madrid, Lo Celso is seen as a potential power buy from The Eagles.
Tottenham Hotspur fans will likely brush off Benfica but the club could be a tempting location for Lo Celso.
He would be the undoubted star at the Estadio da Luz.
As with Tottenham, Benfica can also offer Champions League football.
Also, just like Tottenham, he would have Argentine compatriots in German Conti and Franco Cervi to keep him company. Indeed, 25-year-old Cervi is one of Lo Celso’s oldest acquaintances in football, with both coming through the system at Argentine club Rosario Central.
So Tottenham should not take a now cash-rich Benfica lightly in any transfer battle this summer.
