Arsenal’s hunt for Philippe Coutinho has recently been making the column inches and a new report has stated exactly when the Gunners started to show interest in the player.
As reported by Le10 Sport earlier this week, Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the player and ‘dreams’ of bringing him to The Emirates. Contact has reportedly been made with his agent Kia Joorabchian with Arsenal hopeful of pulling off a coup.
The Barcelona-owned star is set for an exit this summer with his current loan club Bayern Munich pulling the plug on any potential permanent deal.
But it appears this is not some simple opportunistic approach. According to Le10 Sport, Arsenal have actually been in contact regarding a move for Coutinho since last year. The report claims Arsenal contacted Coutinho’s agent at the ‘end of 2019’ regarding a potential summer move.
Since then, the world has been shaken by the global health crisis and Arsenal are in a weak position regarding potential transfer options in the summer.
A recent report from Goal suggested that Barcelona would be looking to sell Coutinho for half his original price-tag, which comes to a figure in the region of £71 million.
Arsenal will instead have to chase a loan deal for a player they have clearly had their eyes on for a number of months. However, even a loan spell is likely to cost Arsenal millions.
It does appear as though Coutinho might be a dream signing for Arsenal this summer. But it still looks more like a pipedream considering the finances involved.
