Arsenal’s board have changed their stance on Mikel Arteta amid the club’s bad run of form which will see the club fail to qualify for European football for next season.

According to The Sun, despite Stan Kroenke and Edu Gaspar believing the Spaniard is still the right man for the job, he has until the end of 2021 to prove himself in the role.

It has led The Mirror to question the stance of the board, which they believe has shifted amid the recent turmoil at the club this season. The publication believes that the support has gone from being unwavering to being supportive yet cautious after The Sun’s claims about Arteta’s job being under threat by the end of 2021.

Back in December, when the club was going through its worst run of form in modern history, reports emerged claiming Stan Kroenke still had unwavering support in the former Manchester City manager.

Obviously, Champions League football was still a hope back then, but, it gave a glimpse into the mindset of Arsenal’s owner. Arteta was here to stay long-term no matter what the outcome of the season, which after no wins across seven Premier League games, looked as bleak as it’s turned out to be.

The recent claims from The Mirror and the report from The Sun really do strike some fear that Arsenal could pull the trigger if the club faces an uncertain start to next season. And on the face of it, any decision which involves Arteta getting sacked is a terrible one.

No European football looks a certainty for next year, and with the club only having to focus on the top-flight, it makes life that much simpler for the 39-year-old. But, if he does perform poorly, the former Manchester City man faces the likelihood of getting sacked, which only means the Gunners have to go through the entire process again.

The new manager will inherit the same group of ‘son-in-laws’ as Arteta did and will have to make them gel in the hope he can get better results. Four managers, one temporary, have struggled to get these players performing, does that mean they all deserve the sack?

The change in stance over Arteta is particularly worrying because of Arsenal’s inexperience of being in this position. Emery sacking was the first time the club got rid of a manager in over 20 years and getting rid of a second will only further plunge this club into turmoil
