Newcastle United have apparently failed in an attempt to bring Manchester United defender, Chris Smalling, to St James’ Park.
According to the Daily Mail, Smalling has no interest in making the move to the northeast after enjoying a superb season over in Italy with Roma last year.
It is believed Steve Bruce is very keen on bringing the Man United man to Newcastle. But despite Bruce’s links with the Red Devils, it appears Smalling has no desire to move north, instead, waiting on interest from Italy.
The Sun claims Smalling, who still has two years on a £120k-a-week deal at Old Trafford, has interest from Italy in the form of Juventus and, of course, Roma.
The England international is unlikely to get back into the fold at United given Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof’s form.
And while he will move on it seems, Newcastle won’t be the team getting their hands on the former Fulham ace.

The collapsing of the Saudi takeover has left a bitter taste in the mouth of everyone connected with Newcastle and players will be looking from the outside thinking they don’t want a part of it.
This could very much be the case with Smalling, who will see Newcastle as a somewhat turbulent club at times.
He was settled in Roma so, quite rightly, is seeking a move back to the Italian capital. Steve Bruce will just have to move on and get back to the drawing board in his hunt for new defenders.
