Report: Chelsea to rival former boss for Barcelona misfit Miralem Pjanic
Chelsea are set to rival Inter Milan this summer in the chase to sign Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic, according to Spanish outlet Sport.
Pjanic arrived at the Nou Camp in 2020 but he’s failed to make the grade with the La Liga giants. He has started just six games in the league this season, with Ronald Koeman seemingly not a huge fan.
The report claims that Chelsea and Inter have already asked about the midfielder’s services ahead of a summer move.
The Blues were interested in the Bosnian performer last summer when Frank Lampard was in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Pjanic caught the eye during his time with Juventus, scoring three goals and registering eight assists during 2019/10, despite operating as a holding midfielder.
The current campaign has proved a real struggle for the 31-year-old midfield warrior. He’s played just 599 minutes in La Liga and hasn’t registered a goal contribution.
As a result, a fresh start could be ideal for Pjanic and after sampling Spain and Italy, he might fancy a foray into English football.
Chelsea do have N’Golo Kante in the midfield engine room but another option certainly wouldn’t go amiss.
Pjanic would perhaps bring a little more guile to the midfield ranks and his goal contributions at Juventus might make him a decent capture.
TBR View: International could be a decent short-term signing
Barcelona are in need of raising funds and if the price is right, Pjanic could prove an ideal signing for Chelsea – with relatively low-risk attached.
The Catalan outfit paid £59 million for his services less than a year ago but it seems unlikely they’ll recoup such a sum given his current form.
Pjanic earns £155,000-a-week with Barcelona and that salary should be more than affordable for Chelsea.
Tuchel will want to stamp his own authority on the squad during the summer and Pjanic could fit just nicely in his patient style of play.
