Report: Chelsea to hand huge pay rise to centre-back
Chelsea are keen to hand Antonio Rudiger a new contract. Talks over a new deal have been pushed back, however, and that could now cost the club money, reports Eurosport.
The German defender is deemed vital by boss Thomas Tuchel. His representatives believe they are now in strong position to demand a £200,000-a-week deal.
Rudiger is currently on £140,000-a-week and has been a key component of Chelsea’s team since Tuchel arrived. He starred in the Champions League Final and went to Euro 2020 with Germany.
The centre-back has proved a decent signing for Chelsea. He joined in 2017 and has lifted the Champions League, Europa League and the FA Cup.
He has played 149 times for the Blues, scoring seven goals. Ruidger hasn’t always been deemed integral, although it seems Tuchel fancies him.
Extending his contract makes perfect sense. He is familiar with the way in which the boss wants to play and shone towards the back end of last season.
He is capable of playing in a back three or as part of a pairing and is very calm and composed in his defending.
Rudiger has just a year left on his contract. As a result, the club will want to get this sorted quickly now his participation at Euro 2020 is over.
Rio Ferdinand is a fan of Rudiger. In March he called him a ‘top player’ and backed him to get even better.
Handing Rudiger a new deal makes perfect sense
Tuchel will want an element of continuity in his approach for next season. With that in mind, the decision to give Rudiger a new contract is a good one.
He’s been a trusted member of the team under the new incumbent. Tweaking his defence too much won’t be necessary and Rudiger is certainly still capable.
The sum does sound a lot. Not too many players at Chelsea are on £200,000-a-week. Furthermore, he is now 28 and is in the peak of his powers.
Fans should be happy with this news though. They really got behind Rudiger last season, with his quality there for all to see.
