Report: Chelsea to hand four-year deal to talented centre-back
Chelsea youngster Levi Colwill is set to put pen-to-paper on a new contract at Stamford Bridge. Fabrizio Romano claims that he will sign a four-year deal with the Blues.
Furthermore, it is also anticipated that he will head straight out on loan, with Championship clubs interested.
The talented 18-year-old is a promising member of the club’s under-23 ranks. Last season, he played 18 times, scoring one goal.
He also made three appearances in the EFL Trophy, playing three games against men and getting a taste of professional football.
Colwill typically operates as a centre-back. He is yet to make an appearance for the Blues senior ranks. Despite that he’s a highly-rated member of the academy.
This certainly seems like a positive step in the right direction. Frank Lampard did some good work with blooding youngsters when he was in charge.
Some might have viewed Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as a sign that the pathway would become somewhat blocked for young talents.
That doesn’t look to be the case. The likes of Mason Mount have kept their places in the team, whilst Billy Gilmour has featured under the Frenchman.
Colwill could be the next off the conveyor belt of Cobham talent. After a Championship loan, his Stamford Bridge future could be bright.
Massive potential: Chelsea making right decision over Colwill
Speculation will now start as to which Championship club will be taking the youngster on loan.
Given he’s not yet played in a men’s team, it does seem unlikely that it’ll be one of the league’s big-hitters.
That won’t matter though. Playing first-team football is far more important at this stage.
Going out and getting regular action could get really take him to the next level and earn him a shot in the Chelsea first-team.
Handing him such a long contract looks like a statement of intent though and Colwill will hope to shine on loan.
