Report: Chelsea stunned in the summer as £238,000-a-week star rejected Tuchel

Chelsea attempted to sign one of Thomas Tuchel’s trusted lieutenants from PSG in the summer. Marquinhos was firmly on the radar of Chelsea but both the club and the player shut down the move.

It was claimed that the deal could have reached a potential £80 million. Neither the Parisian giants nor the player were thought to be keen on discussing the approach, however.

RMC Sport claimed that Tuchel wanted a reunion with his centre-back. The 27-year-old has been with PSG since 2013 when he signed from Roma.

He has become a stalwart in the French capital. He has made 327 appearances, scoring 31 goals and is currently Mauricio Pochettino’s captain.

It’s fair to say that Marquinhos would have proved a decent addition to the Chelsea ranks. Tuchel didn’t add a centre-back in the end, with a move for Sevilla star Jules Kounde also going down the drain.

Still, not signing a defender hasn’t hampered Chelsea. The Blues are flying in the Premier League, with both Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger both bang in form.

Marquinhos wouldn’t have come cheap. On top of the £80 million transfer fee, his wage at PSG currently stands at £238,000-a-week.

Could Chelsea go back in for Marquinhos?

Possibly, although the sums do seem somewhat extortionate. At 27 he does still have lots of time left and crucially, Tuchel trusts him as a centre-back.

The Chelsea boss will be keen not to rock the boat at the moment. Tuchel’s team look very much the team to beat in the race for the Premier League title this season.

Naturally, as a big club, Chelsea will want to continue progressing though. They will want to become that club that demands to win trophies each and every season.

Marquinhos is strong in the air, plays out well from the back and if Tuchel wants him, then Chelsea fans should back him as a player who could take the club forward.
