Report: Chelsea make contact over Tottenham and Manchester United target deemed 'the best in the world' in his position

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Porto and Portugal star Diogo Costa in recent days.

According to 90Min, Spurs have been scouting the 23-year-old as they seek a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.

As well as Tottenham, Manchester United are apparently ‘enamoured’ by Costa.

However, a new report has suggested that Chelsea have now stolen a march on Spurs and the Red Devils.

According to Relevo, ‘the first contacts have been made by some Premier League clubs, in particular with Chelsea’.

Costa is with the Gestifute agency, and the Blues have a ‘very good relationship’ with Jorge Mendes.

Although the goalkeeper has a €75m (£64.5m) release clause, Mendes is ‘already working to find a level solution for his future’.

‘Becoming a world-class goalkeeper’

It’s not surprising to see the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United apparently eyeing Costa.

The 6ft 1in ace has risen through the ranks at Porto to become their number one.

Costa took over from legendary stopper Iker Casillas, who is a big fan of Costa.

“Diogo Costa is becoming a world-class goalkeeper,” Casillas said in an interview with O Jogo.

“He’s a star. He’s going to be a great goalkeeper.”

Former Porto goalkeeper Vitor Baia went even further with his praise for the player.

Baia was asked if Costa could one day become the best goalkeeper in the world, to which he replied: “He’s already the best in the world!”

‘An elite goalkeeper’

Breaking the Lines published a scouting report on Costa earlier this year, and they didn’t half sing his praises.

“There are few goalkeepers who at the age of (then) 22 – start for their nation, hold the number 1 spot at their boyhood club, experience Champions League football and win five domestic trophies,” they began.

“There are few goalkeepers like the present and future of Porto and Portugal, Diogo Meireles da Costa.

“Diogo Costa is unarguably one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in world football. And has attracted interest most notably from the likes of Barcelona and Newcastle recently.

“The hype around Diogo Costa is unquestionably justified looking at what he has won at such a young age, but what about the ‘keeper himself? Well, he is everything you could ask for from a modern goalkeeper.

“The Porto shot-stopper is a well-rounded elite goalkeeper, demonstrated by Porto’s first league game at home to Madeira side CS Maritimo (a common occurrence).

“Where, in an instant, two certain goals were prevented by a young man with nerves of steel, high levels of concentration, safe hands, perfect positioning, agility, and reactions – he has all of this in abundance.

“Costa is also elite coming off his line, being in the top percentiles in Europe for defensive actions outside his area.

“Diogo Costa is an elite goalkeeper, the best in Portugal, arguably already the best out of 10.2 million Portuguese natives and will certainly be among Europe’s best shot-stoppers for years to come.”
