According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Chelsea opening talks with RB Leipzig over a move for Timo Werner could persuade Liverpool to change their plans and join the race to sign the striker this month.
Werner continues to prove to be one of the most lethal goalscorers in Europe. The 23-year-old has scored 20 goals in just 18 Bundesliga games, while he has scored three in six Champions League fixtures.
The Daily Mirror reports that the Blues have celebrated having their transfer ban lifted by opening talks with the league leaders over a move for the Germany international.
And that has prompted Jurgen Klopp’s men to make a move. The Daily Mirror suggests that the Reds were delaying any potential bid for the forward until the summer.
However, the report notes that Chelsea’s efforts have lured the Premier League leaders into the running.
TBR View – Werner would be fantastic signing, but Liverpool won’t fear missing out
There are not many sides in the world right now who would struggle to find a place for Werner in their team. But Liverpool are surely one of them.
The Reds are flying and could arguably get away with ignoring the January transfer altogether.
Nevertheless, signing Werner would still be a fantastic move. He is the second-highest goalscorer across all of Europe’s top leagues.
And seeing him join Chelsea would arguably be disappointing for a lot of Reds fans.
Liverpool cannot even offer Werner a regular starting spot. But it would still be another huge statement of intent if they managed to bring him to Anfield during one of the coming windows.
