Chelsea have been linked with a move to sign Villarreal defender Pau Torres during the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic.

The 24-year-old has previously been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United, with Thomas Tuchel now entering the race.

Torres is on the back of a strong season with the La Liga outfit. He played the full 120 minutes as Unai Emery’s men defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final.

That does look to be his final act in a Villarreal shirt. Torres has a £56 million release clause and it could be activated this summer.

The centre-back has made 87 appearances for the club and would be a big loss should he leave.

It does seem as though he’s destined for a bigger club, however. Chelsea could also find themselves in the market for a central defender.

Thiago Silva will stay at Stamford Bridge but there are doubts over the future of Antonio Rudiger.

Tottenham and PSG are both keen on the German international and The Mirror claims he could depart.

Chelsea snaring Torres could help them steal a march on their Premier League rivals.

The seven-time Spain star has been with Villarreal since the summer of 2019 and his current club face a fight to keep hold of him.

Torres could become Chelsea star

At 24, the central defender has bags of time to continue honing his skills and improving his game.

Chelsea will hope to make improvements despite winning the Champions League at the weekend.

Tuchel will want to create a dynasty at Stamford Bridge and signing better players will be a must.

Chelsea could definitely welcome a world-class central defender who is young and Torres fits that criteria.

Silva will still be at the club next season but he won’t be around forever.

Giving Torres the chance to learn from the Brazilian would be ideal and Chelsea need to pounce for Torres.
