The Chronicle have claimed that Watford are set to complete the signing of free agent Achraf Lazaar, after he was released by Newcastle United last week following a dismal spell on Tyneside – with a medical expected to happen on Tuesday.

Lazaar, 29, joined Newcastle under Rafa Benitez in the summer of 2016 from Italian side Palermo – where he played 76 times. His form was decent, largely coming in Serie A and that left many Toon fans excited when he arrived in the north east.

Fast forward almost five years, and the Morocco international has played just nine times for Newcastle – going on loan to Benevento, Consenza and Sheffield Wednesday. Reports in January suggested AC Milan might consider a move.

But now it appears Lazaar is going to remain in England. The report claims he has signed a six-month contract at Watford, where he will team up with Rob Elliot and Dan Gosling. He will have a medical and take part in training on Tuesday.

TBR’s view – Lazaar move makes sense for all involved

There is a player there. Lazaar showed during his time in Italy that he can shine in top-flight football. But his time at Newcastle never worked out after a poor start – and then replacements being brought in.

Newcastle currently have Jamal Lewis, Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie as options on the left side of the defence. Recently, the likes of Danny Rose, Jetro Willems and even Kenedy have prevented Lazaar from getting into the side. Watford is a good move.
