Report: Champions League clubs join Leeds in race to sign soon-to-be free agent
Italian website Torino Granata have claimed that five other European heavyweights including two Champions League quarter-finalists are battling Leeds United in pursuit of Torino’s Cameroon defender and soon-to-be free agent Nicolas N’Koulou.
N’Koulou, 30, has been excellent for Torino since moving to Italy from France. The 72-time Cameroon international clocked up 115 appearances in his first three seasons with the Serie A side – the initial season being on loan and then joining in 2018.
But this season, N’Koulou has only managed 13 league outings. Dropping down the pecking order, he has also had to overcome a positive test. The Daily Mail claim Leeds are keen to take advantage, with the player out of contract in June.
N’Koulou played under Marcelo Bielsa at Marseille and a reunion is on the cards. But the latest report claims Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG and Porto – two sides in the last eight of the Champions League – are keen, as are Real Betis, Lyon and Monaco.
TBR’s view – Do Leeds really need another centre-back?
Probably not. With Robin Koch now fit again after featuring for the 23’s and appearing on the bench against Chelsea, and Diego Llorente starting and finishing the last four games – Leeds are well-equipped in that area.
Gaetano Berardi is also back, though out of contract – while Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk are also options. Do Leeds need another centre-back? The breakthrough of Struijk and the form of Cooper suggests they are better off improving elsewhere.
