Celtic may face a battle to keep Ryan Christie in the final days of the summer transfer window, with the Sunday Mail reporting that Burnley want the midfielder.
Christie has enjoyed a promising start to the season. He has scored three goals and contributed five assists in 10 appearances in all competitions.
Unfortunately for Neil Lennon, his form has not gone unnoticed. The Sunday Mail reports that Sean Dyche is preparing a late bid for the 25-year-old.
The report claims that the Clarets see Christie as a potential bargain compared to players in the English market. It is also noted that his contract at Parkhead expires in 2022.
The Sunday Mail does suggest that talk over a contract extension is underway. So it will be interesting to see if Burnley’s interest throws a spanner in the works.
TBR View: Christie would be taking gamble pushing for Burnley move, but interest may be a sign of what is to come for Celtic
Burnley have endured a disappointing start to the new season. They have lost both of their opening two games. And having enjoyed a quiet summer so far, they need a strong finish to the window to improve their chances of avoiding being involved in a relegation scrap.
That may perhaps be enough to tempt Christie to snub their interest in this window. Nevertheless, the links may still do Celtic few favours as they attempt to agree a new deal with the Scotland international.
If Christie is tempted by the chance to play in the Premier League, Burnley’s interest may only convince him further that he would like to move south of the border at some stage in his career.
And with his contract up in two years, he may be wary about penning fresh terms. That would, of course, leave Celtic in a tough position.
It may be that Christie is more than happy to sign a long-term contract at Celtic. But if he is considering his future at all, Burnley’s reported interest may come at a really bad time.
