Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata could be offered a £2 million-a-year contract by Hertha Berlin amid interest from the Bundesliga club, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Belgian’s deal at Parkhead expires at the end of the season, and as things stand he will be leaving on a free transfer.

Boyata has been with Celtic for the last four years after signing from Manchester City in 2015, and has won seven major honours during his time with the club.

Talks about a potential new deal for Boyata reached an impasse earlier in the season, and speculation has been rife about an end-of-season move.

The Scottish Sun claim that interested party Hertha are ready to offer Boyata a £2 million-a-year deal to sign with them, which equates to £40,000-a-week.

Not only that, but Boyata would also reportedly receive a hefty signing-on fee.

TBR’s view

If Hertha really are offering such money to Boyata, then it surely rules out any miraculous U-turn for the player to stay at Celtic.

Essentially, Hertha can afford to make such an offer since there would be no transfer fee involved.

Celtic legend John Hartson has compared (in his Evening Times column) the situation to Aaron Ramsey leaving Arsenal for Juventus, and it’s hard to deny the comparison.

Boyata and his agent are in a brilliant bargaining position in terms of wages.

Some Celtic fans may not like it and will feel he is undeserving of such a lucrative deal, but his precarious contractual situation was also going to mean he could potentially command an offer such as this.
