Report: Celtic want Jean-Kevin Augustin

Celtic are interested in Jean-Kevin Augustin as the Hoops brace themselves to potentially lose Odsonne Edouard, according to a report from French outlet Homme du Match.

Edouard could well be on the move in the near future. According to the Daily Record, Celtic have now received a bid worth an initial £18.5 million from Brighton for the Frenchman.

The total fee could rise by a further £3.5 million due to various add-ons. But of course, the Hoops would have to pay Paris Saint-Germain 40 percent of any figure should they sell.

Interestingly, it does appear that Celtic have a potential replacement lined up.

According to Homme du Match, the Bhoys want Augustin. The 24-year-old is also wanted by Fenerbahce.

Augustin move would be huge roll of the dice from Celtic

Augustin has endured a torrid couple of years. It seems a long time ago that he was scoring nine goals in 25 Bundesliga games for RB Leipzig during the 2017/18 season.

Since then, he endured poor loan spells with both Monaco and Leeds United.

He joined Nantes on a free transfer in October. But unfortunately, his time with the Ligue 1 side has not got properly going.

He has not featured since November. And he has not been involved in a match day squad since then.

It seems unlikely that Nantes would have many problems with letting Augustin go.

It would be a major gamble for Celtic to make a move. Augustin has not scored a competitive goal in almost 21 months.

And with Celtic potentially needing to replace their talisman in the near future, supporters are likely to be wary of a move for Augustin.

Having said that, it was only during the 2020 January window that Leeds agreed a loan deal that included a £20 million option to make his move permanent.

And before the Whites got that deal across the line, Manchester United made a last-ditch attempt to try and bring him to Old Trafford.

It is too soon to write Augustin off completely. And if he can reignite his career in the coming years, he could prove to be an inspired signing for someone.

But if Celtic do make a move, it is unquestionably a huge roll of the dice.
