The Bristol Post have claimed that Celtic are interested in signing Aberdeen midfielder Graeme Shinnie as his contract looks set to expire at the end of the season.
The 27-year-old is available on a free transfer but Celtic face competition from English Championship side Bristol City. He has starred once again in the Scottish Premiership as the Dons captain.
It has even seen him earn a place in the Scotland set-up. Shinnie has five Scotland caps to his name, and has now clocked up 185 appearances for Aberdeen – while he also has 187 under his belt with Inverness.
The Daily Express claimed last month that Celtic’s bitter rivals Rangers wanted the left-footed midfielder, as well as Luton Town. But it is said that Shinnie’s agent and the player himself have told Rangers he will not move to Ibrox.
Rangers have raided Aberdeen in recent years for Ryan Jack, while Celtic brought Jonny Hayes to Parkhead in the summer of 2017. It remains to be seen if Shinnie wants to stay in Scotland, or head south.
Celtic have plenty of options in the middle of the park. Indeed, Scott Brown continues to be instrumental to Celtic, while Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie and Olivier Ntcham are excellent options.
But the Hoops do lack a bit of steel in the middle of the park, other than Brown. The Celtic skipper turns 34 in June and he could begin to lose another yard of pace, and stamina.
On a free, Shinnie could be the long-term replacement for Brown. But is he good enough?
