Report: Celtic want England Under-21 star to solve Ange Postecoglou problem area

The Daily Record claims Celtic and Ange Postecoglou are looking to raid Wayne Rooney’s Derby County for defender Lee Buchanan. Derby are currently under a transfer embargo and are in the midst of a financial crisis. Celtic want to take advantage, with the signing of Buchanan.

The 20-year-old had made his derby Debut under Philipp Cocu by the time Rooney came in and replaced the Dutchman. But he has since nailed down the left-back slot at Derby – clocking up 37 of his 44 senior games under Rooney in 2020-21. Now, he has entered the last year of his Derby contract.

Celtic are in desperate need of sorting out their defensive flanks. Against FC Midtjylland, Anthony Ralston was brought in from the cold and Greg Taylor started. Neither are really seen as the long-term solutions at full-back. Rooney is keen to keep him, with Forest having a £1.2m bid rejected.

Buchanan is an exciting talent, but is the answer for Celtic?

Having already impressed in his early stages at Derby, even showing versatility to play on the wing, Buchanan is a top talent. He has plenty of potential. But is that what Celtic need right now? Or do they need players that can hit the ground running and solve problem positions instantly?

Surely it is the latter, as Celtic look to stop Rangers from a second successive title? While Buchanan might be a good signing, and potentially cheaper than he might have been given Derby’s situation, Celtic need a more established left-back. Buchanan and another left-back, is better.
