Celtic are hopeful of signing Manchester City academy starlet Jeremie Frimpong before today’s deadline. According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic are edging closer to signing Frimpong on a permanent deal before midnight.

The Bhoys have been aiming to bolster their defence and have made a number of signings this summer. Frimpong would join Christopher Jullien, Moritz Bauer, Boli Bolingoli, Hatem Abd Elhamed and potentially Greg Taylor in a new-look Celtic defensive department.

Frimpong has been playing for Manchester City’s U23 team but has failed to break into Pep Guardiola’s plans. The teenage right-back, who can also play at left-back, finds himself behind Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker in Man City’s pecking order.

With game time looking limited, the Holland U19 defender could move to Celtic today. Despite featuring heavily for the U23 team, the pacey defender looks set to join Neil Lennon’s team.

TBR’s view

This might not be the signing that excites Celtic fans today. But the club are clearly looking to the future after snapping up two teenagers in Luca Connell and Jonathan Afolabi this summer.

Frimpong would only be a back-up option for now. Elhamed and Bauer are ahead of the 18-year-old at right-back while Bolingoli and Taylor will tussle for the left-back spot. But should Celtic suffer any injuries, Frimpong has a better chance of first-team football than he does at The Etihad.
