Report: Celtic told the bargain fee they need to sign St. Johnstone ace Ali McCann
The Scottish Sun have claimed that Celtic will have to pay £2million to sign St. Johnstone midfielder Ali McCann this summer. The Northern Ireland interenational has been excellent throughout the 2020-21 campaign, and Celtic have taken note. But the report claims multiple clubs are keen.
McCann, 21, has broken into the Northern Ireland set-up after playing 43 times in all competitions for the Scottish Premiership side during 2020-21. While he only scored twice, his performances have been incredibly consistent. He helped St. Johnstone finish in a lofty fifth in the league.
Not only that, but McCann was a part of the side that won both the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup under Callum Davidson. A brilliant season, and now, McCann could be lured away. The midfielder – who was born in Edinburgh – will cost Celtic and any other clubs £2million this summer.
Is McCann worth £2m as Celtic reportedly pursue deal?
Celtic are renowned for scouting the depths of Europe for talent. But the Hoops sometimes need to look at their own patch for talent. Just look back to 2007, Celtic signed Scott Brown from Hibernian and in the summer in which Brown leaves – Celtic need to replace him with a homegrown player.
McCann can be that man. Young, particularly cheap for the season he has had – at just 21, McCann would be an ideal addition and replacement for Brown. But who knows, with Celtic’s recruitment department.
