Neil Lennon’s Celtic are reportedly on the verge of signing reported Leeds United target Vasilios Barkas for £5million, according to Herald Scotland.
The Hoops have lost Craig Gordon this summer, the Scotland international opting to join Hearts after his contract at Parkhead expired.
Fraser Forster, meanwhile, enjoyed a superb loan stint at Parkhead last season but has returned to parent club Southampton and that avenue now looks closed.
Herald Scotland claims AEK Athens ace Barkas will sign a four-year deal with Celtic today after they increased their original offer for his services and included a sell-on clause.
The 26-year-old is apparently travelling to Glasgow today and will put pen to paper if all goes well with his medical, adds the report.
Leeds, who themselves are said to be on the lookout for a new stopper, were linked with Barkas by the Daily Mail earlier this month.
Barkas is a tall, skilled, highly rated and experienced yet relatively young goalkeeper with over 100 competitive appearances for AEK and a Greek championship on his CV.
In addition, the 6ft 5in ace has big-game experience, having played in the Champions League and won 10 caps for Greece.
In 2018, Barkas helped AEK qualify for Europe’s elite competition with a superb performance in their playoff second leg against Vidi, after which opposition coach Marko Nicolic said the keeper was “fantastic” (Agona Sport).
With just Scott Bain on their books, Celtic really need to strengthen in goal and it looks as though they will get their man, while Leeds will need to look elsewhere to strengthen their ranks ahead of their Premier League return.
