Celtic’s hopes of signing Ben Davies ahead of next summer appear to have been dealt a blow, with The Sun on Sunday (25/10; page 61) reporting that the centre-back has his sights set on a move to the Bundesliga.
Davies’s future with Preston North End remains a talking point. As noted by the report, his contract at Deepdale expires at the end of the season – and it is claimed that he is not expected to extend his terms.
The Sun on Sunday claims that Celtic were one of the sides priced out of a move for Davies in the summer. Interestingly, The Sun suggested in September that the 25-year-old was most likely to agree a pre-contract deal with the Hoops in January.
Now however, it would appear that Neil Lennon may be set for disappointment.
The Sun on Sunday (25/10; page 61) reports that Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart want Davies. And it is suggested that he is keen to make a switch to Germany.
Of course, Celtic may still remain optimistic. Like the Bundesliga pair, they are able to discuss a pre-contract deal with Davies in January.
They do not need to worry about agreeing a fee with Preston. So there still looks to be an opportunity for the Bhoys.
But it currently looks as if they have ground to make up in the race for the centre-back.
