Report: Celtic star Kristoffer Ajer keen on Newcastle move
Newcastle United have received a huge boost in the race to sign Kristoffer Ajer, with the Daily Mail reporting that the Celtic star views a St James’ Park move as the ideal next step in his career.
Ajer looks set to leave Parkhead this summer. As noted by the Mail, his contract with Celtic expires at the end of next season and Newcastle have been joined by the likes of Norwich City and AC Milan in the running for his signature.
But the report suggests that Ajer has his heart set on heading to Tyneside.
The Mail claims that Ajer sees regular football with the Magpies as the ideal option. However, there looks to be one major hurdle for Newcastle to clear.
The Daily Mail reports that Steve Bruce’s men are prepared to offer £8 million for the 22-year-old. Celtic however, would ideally want £25 million.
It should be noted that Herald Scotland has previously reported that the Hoops want £12 million for Ajer. So perhaps £25 million may prove too ambitious a target.
Having said that, Newcastle should surely brace themselves for disappointment if they hope to pay just £8 million.
Yes, Ajer is out of contract in 2022. And he has not necessarily had the best year. But he is a huge talent with a frightening amount of potential.
It would be a huge error if Newcastle decided to dig their heels in and only offer £8 million – unless Celtic stun everyone and decide that that is an acceptable fee.
