Celtic are yet to give up hope that they could win the race to sign Ivan Toney this summer, despite Brentford having a bid for the striker accepted, according to a report from The Scottish Sun.
Toney has caught the eye of the Hoops after a stunning season in League One. The Peterborough United star has scored 26 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions.
He ended the campaign as the division’s top goalscorer, nine clear of any rival. His achievement is all the more remarkable given that Posh still had 11 games to go before the campaign was called off.
The Scottish Sun reports that Brentford have had a bid accepted for the 24-year-old. But that has acted as the catalyst for the Bhoys to get involved in the race.
The report notes that Celtic have not given up hope of poaching Toney from under the Bees’ noses.
TBR View: Huge statement if Celtic can land Toney
Moving to Brentford will surely be an incredibly attractive proposition for the forward. The Bees could still be playing in the Premier League next season as they continue to make progress year on year.
So it would be a big coup for Celtic if they could land him this summer.
The Scottish Sun recently suggested that Peterborough could demand as much as £15 million for the former Newcastle United man.
It remains to be seen if that is what his admirers have to pay. But that figure helps highlight just how influential he has been this past season.
And if Celtic manage to convince Toney to move to Parkhead, it would arguably be a huge statement from Neil Lennon’s men ahead of the new season.
