According to The Herald, Birger Meling should become Celtic’s latest signing. The Bhoys are closing in on the capture of Meling to solve the left-back problem.
Neil Lennon has been trying to bring in new full-backs and he wants one on each side before the end of the Scottish transfer window. Meling will provide a solution on the left-hand side of the defence.
Boli Bolingoli was brought in earlier this summer but Lennon opted to play Callum McGregor – a midfielder – ahead of him at left-back last week. Celtic crashed out of the Champions League after losing to Cluj with many criticising Lennon’s decision to play McGregor at left-back.
Meling would add an extra face at left-back. The 10-cap Norway international would vie for the starting spot with Bolingoli at Celtic Park. He could also allow Bolingoli to play as an out-and-out winger if Lennon wanted.
Currently at Rosenborg, Meling has played against Celtic in the past. The 24-year-old, who has also played for Stabaek, has racked up over 100 appearances for Rosenborg. He has also spent time in England in the past, playing for Middlesbrough’s academy.
Meling is a much-needed signing. Lennon clearly does not have the confidence to play Bolingoli in big matches yet and Meling provides some competition. However, he will not be able to play in the Europa League qualifiers because he will be cup-tied.
Kristoffer Ajer could play a major role in Meling settling in. The pair play together for the Norwegian national side and they can strike a rapport at the back. Celtic just need a right-back now.
