Celtic have reportedly been informed that they will need to pay Premier League side Brighton £2million to sign their defender Shane Duffy on loan this season.

According to the Scottish Daily Mail in its print edition (page 112, 15 August), the Bhoys are in competition alongside West Ham, West Brom and Burnley for the centre-back’s signature.

It is understood that the 28-year-old has spoken with Celtic boss Neil Lennon about a one-year loan and is keen on the move, but they will need to fork out £2million in loan fees to add him to their squad.

The Republic of Ireland international is a powerhouse that has shown in the Premier League he is dominant at the back in the air and has been a real leader too next to Brighton captain Lewis Dunk.

TBR’s View:

Celtic may initially be put off by a £2million fee just to take Duffy for a single season, but he could end up having a colossal impact at Parkhead and it would all be worth it if he plays a part in winning 10 in a row, as the club search for a 10th consecutive league title.

The Brighton man only lost his starting XI position this season due to the signing of Adam Webster, but before that there were no signs of his form dipping and he’s an old fashioned defender that could be a real force in Scotland.

His experience would be perfect for Celtic’s young centre-back pairing Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer to lean on, as there is a real youthful look to the current backline.
