Kilmarnock have reportedly rejected a swap-deal proposal from Celtic. According to The Daily Record, Celtic will walk away from the Greg Taylor deal because Kilmarnock turned down an offer of £1m plus some loan players.
Celtic wanted to send Jack Hendry and maybe some other players to Kilmarnock, as well as paying £1m for Taylor. But Killie will demand £3m or no sale – leaving Celtic frustrated in this pursuit.
Taylor has become the Bhoys’ top target since losing Kieran Tierney. Arsenal snapped Tierney up from Celtic and now there is a vacancy for a new left-back. But it does not look like Taylor will be moving to Glasgow before the Scottish window slams shut.
Celtic could now turn back to Birger Meling, according to this report. Rosenborg have their Champions League qualifier tonight and Meling could become Celtic’s top target if they lose.
Whether it is Taylor or Meling, Celtic need to sort this problem position out soon. Not having a left-back arguably cost Celtic their place in the Champions League this season as Callum McGregor had to fill in against CFR Cluj.
Boli Bolingoli has joined this summer but Neil Lennon clearly does not completely trust him yet. Taylor would bring Scottish experience and Meling would be a wildcard shout. But this is an area that needs sorting out as quickly as possible.
