Report: Celtic keen on free agent Renato Tapia, linked in January

Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Feyenoord midfielder Renato Tapia this summer, as the player confirms he will be leaving the Dutch club.

The versatile Peruvian international has confirmed that, after four years in Rotterdam, he will be leaving the club when his contract expires in the summer, as reported by Algemeen Dagblad.

That is no surprise. The centre-back, who can also play in holding midfield or at right-back, has been on the fringes at De Kuip for some time and spent a period on loan with fellow Eredivisie side Willem II last year.

The 24-year-old was already being linked with a move to Celtic, along with Old Firm rivals Rangers, in January by Voetbal International.

Now, Libero from Tapia’s native Peru is suggesting that the utility player could be on his way to Glasgow in the next transfer window.

They claim that Celtic are still keen on a move for the player, whilst Mexican and Argentine powerhouses Cruz Azul and Boca Juniors, respectively, are also keen.

Celtic, who are celebrating their most recent Scottish title win, will no doubt be looking to improve the squad this summer and a move for Tapia would make perfect sense given his international pedigree and ability to play in a number of positions.

Tapia has an impressive 53 caps for his nation already and played every game as Peru narrowly lost out on Copa America gold to Brazil last year, so a work permit should be no problem for the 6ft 1ins talent.

Celtic fans will no doubt be hoping this is another battle with their local rivals that they come out of triumphant.
