Report: Celtic in talks to sign left-footed defender that Manchester City have considered, Desmond crucial

The Irish Mirror claim that Celtic want Shamrock Rovers defender Liam Scales and are in talks to land the 22-year-old left-footer. A five-time Ireland Under-21 international, the defender has starred for Shamrock in his 18 months at the club. Dermot Desmond could be crucial to a deal.

Scales, 22, joined Shamrock in January 2020 and has since gone on to play 45 times in all competitions for the Irish outfit. In his first season, which was of course cut short due to the pandemic, he won the Irish title with Shamrock. Just over halfway during the 2021 season, Rovers are top.

The report claims Manchester City have looked at Scales in the past and now, Celtic are in talks to land the defender. English Championship sides are also keen on Scales – who can play centre-back or left-back. Celtic owner Desmond has a 25% stake in Rovers and that could prove to be important.

Scales could be a hidden gem for Celtic

It was borderline embarrassing for Celtic on Saturday. Both goals conceded were defensive mistakes. New signing Carl Starfelt was at fault for the first goal and Scott Bain for the second. Celtic need additions and then competition for places to bring the best out of those who will start.

Not only that, but Celtic also need left-sided defenders. Boli Bolingoli is hanging by a thread while Greg Taylor was poor against Hearts. Diego Laxalt’s loan came to an end this summer. Scales might just be the kind of signing no-one pays attention too, but ends up being a scalp.
