Italian outlet SampNews24 have claimed Scottish champions Celtic saw a bid rejected for Sampdoria defender Omar Colley this summer, but they could resurrect a move to land the African ace – if Kris Ajer leaves.
Colley, 27, has starred for Sampdoria since joining the club from KRC Genk in the summer of 2018. The Gambia international has clocked up 56 appearances in the past two years, and that has attracted interest from Celtic.
The report claims that Celtic had a bid rejected for Colley, with the Serie A side said to be looking to bring in a fee believed to be in the region of £9.2million and £11million. He has a contract at the club until the summer of 2022.
It remains to be seen if Colley will leave Sampdoria this summer and if Celtic will land the centre-back. But the latest report states that Celtic will only resurrect a move for Colley, if Ajer leaves – with Serie A giants AC Milan strongly linked.
TBR’s view – Colley an excellent replacement for Ajer
Certainly, huge transfer fees have been touted for Norway international Ajer and while he has broken his way into Celtic’s starting line-up – he is still very capable of a mistake and has shown that on the European stage.
If Celtic can sell Ajer for a decent fee and bring in Colley as his replacement while also making a profit, then it would be excellent business – especially given that Colley is arguably on a par with Ajer, if not better.
