Report: Celtic eye Watford captain Troy Deeney
Celtic are one of the sides interested in signing Troy Deeney as he considers his Watford future, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (29/8; page 66).
The Hoops appear to have taken little time to close the gap between themselves and Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
In fact, it feels like a lifetime ago that Hearts were beating Celtic on the opening day of the campaign.
Ange Postecoglou’s men look to be making progress at a superb rate heading into the first Old Firm game of the campaign.
And that has largely been down to the signings the club have made. Players such as Liel Abada and Kyogo Furuhashi have been outstanding at Parkhead.
And it seems that Celtic are not done yet. According to the Sunday Mirror (29/8; page 66), they are one of the teams keen on signing Deeney.
It is noted that boyhood club Birmingham City also want the 33-year-old. It comes after Watford confirmed this week that they were in talks with their captain about his future at Vicarage Road.
Could Troy Deeney prove an inspired addition for Celtic?
Deeney has become more of a peripheral figure with the Hornets in the last few years. He only made 19 appearances in the Championship last season.
And with that, some Celtic fans may be hoping that he ends up at Birmingham.
However, he continued to score goals. In his previous two seasons in the Premier League, he managed a combined total of 19 strikes.
He would also provide additional leadership. And with questions over Odsonne Edouard’s future, a move may not be a terrible piece of business.
Celtic have added a couple of experienced Premier League players to their ranks already this summer. Joe Hart and James McCarthy look to be smart signings.
And perhaps Postecoglou may feel that Deeney’s situation presents an opportunity too good to turn down.
