Celtic have joined Rangers in the race to sign John Souttar, with The Scottish Sun reporting that a resolution on his future could come as soon as next week.

Souttar has already equalled the number of league appearances he managed across the last two campaigns combined at the start of this Scottish Premiership season.

He has scored three times for Hearts this term. And his form for the club has earned him a recall to the Scotland fold.

It was his goal that set Steve Clarke’s men on their way to a stunning victory over Denmark at Hampden Park this month.

There looks to be cautious optimism that his previous injury problems are behind him. And with that, several sides are now looking at a potential move.

The Scottish Sun reports that there are nine sides in the Championship – where his brother Harry is currently playing – chasing his signature. Meanwhile, Celtic and Rangers are apparently admirers.

The report notes that Souttar’s contract at Tynecastle only runs until the end of May. That means that he could potentially agree a pre-contract deal next week. And that would set the stage for a potential January exit.

Souttar signing could prove fantastic piece of business for Celtic

Ange Postecoglou appears to have put together a very decent partnership in Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt. Meanwhile, Stephen Welsh is leading the way for the number of talented youngsters available to the Hoops boss in that position.

Celtic also have Christopher Jullien to come back at some stage. Like Souttar, the Frenchman has endured a torrid time with injury.

Some Celtic fans may have their concerns about Souttar. They may question whether they can rely on him.

But given his age, his contract status and his Scottish Premiership experience, a move for the defender definitely has the potential to be inspired.
