The Daily Mail have claimed that Celtic are battling Dutch league leaders Ajax in pursuit of Aston Villa teenager Aaron Ramsey – with the 17-year-old midfielder shining for the Premier League outfit’s reserve side.
Ramsey – who shares his name with that of ex-Arsenal and current Juventus star Aaron – is impressing in the club’s second string this season. He has scored three goals in nine Premier League 2 matches for the Midlands side.
But his future at Villa is in doubt. His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, meaning he could leave older brother Jacob – who has managed eight senior appearances for Dean Smith’s side during the 2020-21 campaign.
Indeed, Villa are keen on keeping the younger Ramsey – but non-English sides can secure a pre-contract agreement for the England Under-17 international, meaning he leaves for a nominal fee in the summer.
Celtic and Ajax are keen on striking such a deal, with Neil Lennon’s men renowned for doing such business – Jeremie Frimpong and Moussa Dembele recent examples. A new deal is likely to be offered, as are bids from Celtic and Ajax.
TBR’s view – Ramsey should seriously consider Celtic, or Ajax
At Villa, his older brother might just add to the difficult path he faces when it comes to breaking into Smith’s side. Ross Barkley, Jack Grealish, Conor Hourihane and plenty more sit ahead of the youngster in the first team.
But should he move to Celtic or Ajax, he may find his path into senior football much easier. In an attacking Ajax side, he would benefit from the Eredivisie outfit’s enormous faith in youth. Celtic too, who use their academy aplenty.
Even last time out, Celtic handed debuts to Cameron Palmer and Armstrong Okoflex. Ramsey should seriously consider moves to either Celtic or Ajax – given his first-team prospects would improve greatly compared to Villa.
