The Daily Record have claimed that Celtic have been ‘alerted’ the possibility of signing Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts with the January transfer window set to open at the end of the week.
Roberts, 23, played 78 times for Celtic during a two-and-a-half-year loan spell at Parkhead between January 2016 and the end of the 2017-18 campaign. He won the Scottish Premiership three times during that period, scoring 18 and creating 26.
The England Under-21 man was linked with another loan at Celtic – only for Roberts to try something different and move to Spain with La Liga side Girona, a move which saw him struggle. Spells with Norwich and Middlesbrough have also flopped.
He remains with Neil Warnock’s Boro until the end of the season but having managed just seven appearances, he could see his loan at the Riverside cancelled. Celtic are on red ‘alert’ to bring Roberts back to Parkhead with James Forrest still injured.
TBR’s view – An absolute no-brainer, if Celtic have the chance
The one position Neil Lennon needs to strengthen is out wide. What better player is there to sign than Roberts, who knows exactly what it means to play for Celtic – and just how important winning 10 in a row is come the end of the campaign.
A move be ideal on the pitch, but it also makes sense off of it. Celtic will already have strong connections with Roberts and Man City following past moves – and he is represented by the same agent as Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic (TransferMarkt).
