The Scottish Sun have claimed that Cristian Gamboa is set to leave Celtic and join Danish side FC Copenhagen, after rejecting a move back to his home country with Deportiva Alajuelense in Costa Rica.
Gamboa, 29, has been left on the sidelines at Celtic this season, featuring just seven times throughout the whole campaign. Indeed, the former West Bromwich Albion defender is now available on a free.
His contract is set to expire at Celtic at the end of the month and can change clubs for nothing. It seems as though that Gamboa has rejected the chance to return to Costa Rica, though.
Instead, he is returning to Scandinavia after spells with Norwegian sides Fredrikstad and Rosenborg, by joining Danish team Copenhagen – who are celebrating after winning the Danish Superliga.
The 73-time Costa Rica international has managed just 31 appearances for Celtic in all competitions since Brendan Rodgers lured the right-back to Parkhead for £1million from the Herald.
Little needs to be said about Gamboa’s exit. He provided an adequate option when Celtic were down on numbers at full-back, but 31 appearances in three seasons means it is only right he leaves.
Choosing Copenhagen over a move back to Costa Rica is the right choice. Still only 29, he still has plenty to offer and a move to Denmark who will be looking to qualify for Champions League football is a solid move.
