Newcastle United will reportedly go all out for Callum Wilson, who is now the club’s top transfer target.
According to The Daily Mail, the England international is the main name for Steve Bruce, who needs additional firepower following the struggles of last season.
The Magpies managed a relatively disappointing 38 goals in 38 league games in 2019/20, with marquee signing Joelinton struggling to hit the ground running.
Without a takeover, the club may have as little as £30 million to spend on transfers according to the Mail.
With The Daily Express reporting Wilson’s value as being around £20 million, it could take two-thirds of their budget to land the 28-year-old.
Wilson has been with Bournemouth since 2014 and has been a huge hit for the south coast club.
The star has made 187 appearances in total for the Cherries, scoring 67 goals and making 30 assists.
TBR’s View – Wilson should be a priority, but…
Newcastle are right to be making Wilson their top priority this summer, but the club can’t be overpaying.
Bournemouth are now a Championship club and likely need to sell top stars to prepare for life in the second tier.
Newcastle would be a great club for £60,000-a-week star Wilson (Spotrac), who is a proven goalscorer at Premier League level, but the Magpies do need to save money to strengthen other areas of the team.
Some strong negotiation will be required, but to land the player for around £15 million would surely be a better deal for Newcastle.
