French outlet Le Progres has claimed that former Olympique Lyonnais manager Bruno Genesio is currently in talks to discuss a move to Newcastle United and replace Rafa Benitez.

Genesio, 52, left Lyon in April 2019 after almost four years on Tyneside and exactly 100 wins in 182 league and cup fixtures as Lyon boss. Now, he is on the lookout for a new club.

It appears that he could be on his way to St. James’ Park this summer, with the former Lyon player in England discussing a four-year deal to become Newcastle’s new manager – replacing Benitez.

The report claims that a deal is close to being agreed and although Genesio is not a fan of the weather, he is excited at the prospect of moving to the Premier League and becoming the new manager of The Toon.

TBR’s view – Genesio a good manager, but is he Newcastle?

Owner Mike Ashley is already said to have rejected appointing Giovani van Bronckohorst as he wants a manager with Premier League experience – one that knows the top tier of English football.

Genesio is certainly lacking in that department, so if Ashley is to hire Genesio, then surely he must have changed his mind within the short time of rejecting van Bronckhorst and agreeing a move for the ex-Lyon gaffer.

Steve Bruce still looks likeliest to get the job, though. But Genesio would be so much better.
