Report: Brands was a big fan of Everton signing James Garner

Everton wanted to sign James Garner for some time, with The Athletic reporting that Marcel Brands was a big fan of the midfielder during his time on Manchester United’s books.

Garner made a move away from Old Trafford right at the end of the summer transfer window. As reported by Sky Sports, Everton have spent £15 million to bring the midfielder to Goodison Park.

It appears to be an incredibly smart piece of business from the Toffees. Frank Lampard’s side enjoyed a really strong end to the window. And signing Garner was definitely one extremely shrewd move.

Garner’s spell at Nottingham Forest was probably the stint that made many sit up and take notice of the 21-year-old. He arrives on Merseyside having only made two Premier League appearances before this season.

But it turns out that Everton have had the player on their radar for a lot longer.

In fact, The Athletic says that Garner was a favourite of Brands. Of course, the Dutchman left Everton in late 2021 after three-and-a-half years with the club.

The club thought about trying to sign Garner on loan on a number of occasions. However, they wanted to see him ply his trade in the Championship before making a decision on making a move.

But clearly, his spell at the City Ground did enough to convince those now making decisions.

It was not a perfect window for Everton. They probably could have done with another striker option coming in. But the signs are positive.

The midfield looks almost transformed. Amadou Onana looks to be a remarkable prospect. And Idrissa Gueye could be an inspired signing.

But Garner’s arrival has not been overshadowed. He has been described as a ‘phenomenal‘ talent in the past.

And while Brands’ time at Everton will not be fondly remembered, Everton fans may take encouragement from just how many admirers Garner seems to have ahead of his Toffees debut.
