Report: Boca Juniors want Arsenal player, he loves the club

ESPN have claimed that Boca Juniors want to sign Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira this summer, with the Uruguayan midfielder remaining out on loan at Atletico Madrid where he is struggling to get much game time.

Torreira, 25, joined Diego Simeone’s side last summer on a season-long loan after Arsenal moved to re-sign Dani Ceballos, hand Mo Elneny another chance and sign Thomas Partey. Torreira slipped down the pecking order.

That is, despite clocking up 89 Arsenal appearances in two seasons following his £26million (BBC) move from Sampdoria in 2018. He has since struggled for form in Spain, starting just five of his 22 appearances for Atleti.

He is hardly expected to complete a permanent move to Atleti this summer given his lack of starts, and a move from Arsenal to a different side is much more likely. Boca are said to be interested, a club Torreira loves.

“This love for Boca was born many years ago. We are a very soccer family and Uruguayans consume a lot from Argentine football, I have been passionate about Boca from a very young age,” Torreira told ESPN in 2020.

TBR’s view – Boca a very good move for Torreira

While he could easily join a side that are mid-table in Italy or Spain, Torreira will want to add silverware to his personal trophy cabinet and right now – remaining in Italy or Spain is not going to get him that.

Joining a side he supported as a child, as well as a club that gets silverware on a regular basis, Torreira and Boca is a match made in heaven. If Boca can arrange a fee that is agreeable with Arsenal, then Torreira has to go.
