According to the Telegraph, Birmingham City are currently leading the race to secure the services of Jake Clarke-Salter. The Blues are apparently close to striking a deal with Chelsea to take the defender on loan for the season.
Clarke-Salter is a very highly thought of talent. The 21-year-old centre-back spent last season on loan with Dutch club Vitesse. The youngster impressed in the Eredivisie, making 29 appearances over the course of the campaign.
Now, the 12-cap England under-21 international looks set for a return to the Championship. He last featured in the second tier in 2018, when he spent a loan spell with Sunderland. He struggled to consistently impress for the Black Cats. However, he would arrive at St Andrew’s Stadium this summer a far more developed and mature player.
If Clarke-Salter could impress for Birmingham, he’d stand a great chance of breaking into the first team squad at Stamford Bridge next season. Frank Lampard has shown before he’s not afraid to put his faith in youngsters, which bodes well for Clarke-Salter.
In the meantime, Birmingham could benefit enormously from the youngster’s presence. Signing Clarke-Salter on loan would be a cost-effective way for Pep Clotet to add some much-needed quality and depth to his defensive contingent.
