Report: Bernd Leno likely to remain Arsenal number one for the time being
Arsenal spent big money on Aaron Ramsdale in the summer but for now, it looks like Bernd Leno will remain the number one choice for Mikel Arteta.
Leno is already coming under pressure after a poor start to the season which has seen the Gunners fail to pick up a point as yet. The Gunners have yet to score, and have also conceded nine in the process.
However, a winnable game against Norwich comes their way today, and Goal have reported that Leno is set to keep his place in the sticks. For the time being, at least.
There had been some murmurings in the week that Ramsdale could get an early nod over Leno. However, Goal have suggested that Leno will remain the man for now in the Premier League. That means the German is likely to start against Norwich at The Emirates today.
TBR’s View: Clock is ticking for Leno at Arsenal
While it’s clear that Ramsdale will be the number one eventually for Arsenal, it could come quicker than most expect. Leno is under pressure, there is no doubt about it.
Yes, Arsenal have been poor as a collective. But he’s not exactly fighting his corner, and his wilting display on the opening day against Brentford set the tone for things.
Leno, put simply, has to turn it around. He’s an experienced stopper who cost a lot of money. There can be no excuses, and in a young team, he has to stand up and be counted.
Failure to do so, which includes today against Norwich, could see Ramsdale thrown in sooner, rather than later.
