Report: Bernard told Carlo Ancelotti wants him after move away fails

Carlo Ancelotti told Bernard that he wants him at the club. That’s despite Everton trying to sell the Brazilian on deadline day.

This comes from the Liverpool Echo. They claim that Everton were open to selling Bernard on deadline-day if the player found somewhere he’d get first-team football.

That’s something he’s lacked recently. The Brazilian hasn’t featured in any Premier League games this season and only started 15 in the last campaign.

Despite that, Ancelotti apparently wants Bernard. The club told the 28-year-old that he’s a ‘valued’ member of the squad and that the boss wants him there.

They made it clear, says the Echo, that they wanted him at Goodison Park.

TBR View:

We’re inclined to believe Everton are being truthful here. That’s not a given, after all, as it’s very easy to simply tell a player they value him once he’s stuck there.

But at the quoted price (£7m), you’ve got to believe Everton could have found a suitor if they were desperate to get rid. Bernard is still only 28 and he’s a talented player.

Even in tough economic times, someone somewhere would take a chance on him at that price. Instead, he’ll remain at Everton this season.

Perhaps Theo Walcott’s departure opens the door for Bernard somewhat. Walcott only made one substitute appearance in the Premier League this season but that’s one more than Bernard. He was clearly ahead of the Brazilian in the pecking order but that’s no longer the case.

His departure will surely hand an opportunity to Bernard down the line. Even if it’s just a short showing off the bench, it’ll be a chance for the 28-year-old to repay the apparent faith from Ancelotti.
