Portuguese website Journal Noticias have claimed that Benfica have made the decision to cancel Gedson Fernandes’ loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur in January – six months before his temporary move is due to end.
Since joining the club in January 2020, Portugal international Gedson has managed just 13 appearances for the club. Only one has come this season despite the club’s presence in the Europa League, in the form of the win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
Rumours have understandably originated over the future of his loan given his lack of game time. Now, the latest report claims his 18-month loan will be cancelled just two thirds into that deal – with a decision being ‘communicated internally’.

TBR’s view – Where did Gedson go wrong?
Unfortunately for Gedson, he needed to make an instant impact but failed to do so. Lightweight, Jose Mourinho struggled to find the right position for the Benfica man – given that he was not physical enough for central midfield.
He was used out wide on occasion, but his most telling moment in a Tottenham shirt came when he missed a penalty against Norwich City in the FA Cup. He did little else during his Spurs stay – and he needs to leave to further his development.
The fact that Harry Winks and other midfielders at Tottenham are struggling for game time means Gedson has almost zero chance of playing during the second half of the campaign. It makes sense for him to leave, for all parties involved.
